On Saturday, mid-Missouri will be able to experience one in all its glory at the 8th Annual Rootin’ Tootin’ Chili Cookoff.
The cookoff, presented by MFA Oil and MBS Textbook Exchange, will be held at the Boone County Fair Grounds, and will feature the best chili that the area has to offer. This is the first year that the event has been held at the Fair Grounds.
While there will still be snow on the ground outside, the atmosphere and chili inside the Central Missouri Events Center will keep guests nice and warm. Guests will be able to sample each team’s chili all while listening to live music.
Each team competing in the cookoff will be required to prepare their chili completely from scratch without leaving their booth. Eventually, the teams will be judged on their chili as well as their booth’s decoration.
Teams get to work early on the morning of the competition. At 8 a.m., hours before the doors are open to the public, teams get to work chopping vegetables, measuring spices and preparing their chili for public consumption.
When the doors open to the public, each team will serve out chili upon request as guests walk around to each team’s booth. The public will be able to try some of the best chili in the state, ranging from spicy to sweet. One thing is for sure: no two chilis will taste the same.
For the first time, the public will be able to vote for their favorite chili this year. The team that receives the most votes will be awarded with the People’s Choice Award.
In addition to the People’s Choice Award, there are three other award categories: Grand Champion Chili, Best Booth and Big Bowl Award. The Big Bowl Award is presented to the team that raises the most money. All of the proceeds raised will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Columbia.
The cookoff will run from 2 to 7 p.m., leaving plenty of time to get home for the Missouri men’s basketball team’s tipoff against Kentucky at 8 p.m.
